One of the best
things about living in a warm climate is that it is possible to have a fall
garden. In my opinion, fall is the really the BEST time to have a garden where
I live, because the weather is cooler, the bugs are fewer, the chances for rain
are better, and it is possible to grow things that, if planted in summer, would
shoot up out of the ground and immediately keel over from the heat.

Our
oak trees are dropping acorns, and the hordes of deer that call our area home
are acting like they haven’t eaten in days. Normally, the deer come out in the
evening or we’ll see them around dawn. But now that the acorn banquet is being
served, they’re coming out during the daytime to take advantage of the bounty
and eat as much as they can.
When
our two dogs, Shiner and Domino, see deer — on the property but still a good
distance away — the usual result is a round of frenzied barking on Shiner’s
part, which seems to be more about making sure that Domino is aware of the
situation than with scaring off the deer.

My father always said
that it is possible to find something good in just about anything and I can now
definitely say that I have found something good about drought: the rain smell
is even better when the ground is so dry it cracks.
